Background of the Study

Workplace motivation is a key determinant of job satisfaction, performance, and commitment. In nursing, motivation influences the quality of care provided, the efficiency of healthcare delivery, and the retention of staff in the profession. Nurses in Kebbi State, as in many parts of Nigeria, face several challenges, including inadequate salaries, poor working conditions, and high workloads, which can result in burnout and low job commitment. However, motivated nurses tend to exhibit higher levels of commitment to their work, which directly impacts patient care and organizational effectiveness.

Research suggests that workplace motivation strategies, such as recognition, career advancement opportunities, and supportive management, can significantly improve nurse commitment and overall job satisfaction (Nwogu & Essien, 2024). Given the growing demand for healthcare services and the shortage of nursing staff in Kebbi State, understanding the relationship between workplace motivation and nurses' commitment is crucial for improving retention and the quality of care. This study seeks to assess how workplace motivation impacts nurses' commitment to their work in Kebbi State.

Statement of the Problem

Nurses in Kebbi State are often demotivated by poor working conditions, lack of recognition, and insufficient career development opportunities. This lack of motivation can result in low job commitment, which negatively affects patient care and increases turnover rates among nurses. Despite the importance of motivation in improving job commitment, there is limited research on how motivation influences nursing commitment in Kebbi State. This study aims to explore the effect of workplace motivation on nurses' commitment in the state.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the factors contributing to workplace motivation among nurses in Kebbi State.

2. To evaluate the relationship between workplace motivation and nurses' commitment to their work in Kebbi State.

3. To recommend strategies for improving workplace motivation and commitment among nurses in Kebbi State.

Research Questions

1. What are the key factors that influence workplace motivation among nurses in Kebbi State?

2. How does workplace motivation impact nurses' commitment to their work in Kebbi State?

3. What strategies can be employed to improve workplace motivation and commitment among nurses in Kebbi State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Higher levels of workplace motivation are positively correlated with increased nurses' commitment to their work in Kebbi State.

2. Poor working conditions, inadequate pay, and lack of recognition are significant barriers to nurses' commitment in Kebbi State.

3. Workplace motivation strategies significantly improve nurse retention and reduce turnover in Kebbi State.
